Ansoumana “Papiss” Dieme

What is your involvement with the YMCA?

I’m responsible for youth programs at the YMCA of Ziguinchor. In my role I have been able to use my energy and creativity to attract young volunteers to the three YMCA branches of southern Senegal. I have also been involved in a range of YMCA programs including radio broadcasts, the reproductive health and HIV/AIDS program, the promotion of child rights, peace programs and in the fight against landmines. I also represented the YMCA at the African Alliance youth summit in Ethiopia in 2009, where I was certified as a Subject to Citizen Ambassador!

Who are your role models?

My role model is Nelson Mandela, for his humanism and his sense of sacrifice, patience, determination, and endurance. Thinking of Nelson Mandela reminds me that I must continue to fully participate in creating positive change both within myself and for the world around me.
What is your passion? One of my passions is sports such as soccer and swimming. Sports allow me to keep fit and also to relax. Music is another passion of mine. I like to sing and lead songs at camps, and music also helps me relax and spread joy around me.
What would you like to share with people in Toronto?
I would like to share my experience in managing groups of children and youth at the YMCA in Ziguinchor. I would also like to share my commitment to volunteering, my life and the love I have for my community.

What are you hoping to learn from your experience in Canada?

I want to have a variety of experiences through exploring the culture of young YMCA participants from all different cultural backgrounds. I also want to learn more about managing programs for children and youth, and use that knowledge to enrich the programs at the YMCA in Senegal.
