Violence in Medellin

“Cómo luchar contra el mundo cuando todo se derrumba, cómo olvidarnos y ya y que la vida perdura, he visto a un hombre llorar frente a un espejo, yo le doy gracias a mi madre que es lo que más quiero y así le canto a la vida pues porque soy poeta, tal vez le cante al fututo, de eso dependan mis letras” - Excerpt from Tears of Blood, song by Son Bata.

Yesterday in Medellin, Colombia, a young leader by the name of Andres Felipe Medina Palacios was killed as a result of gun violence. Andres Felipe was one of the few positive role models for young children in his comunity. He was the co-founder of an organization called Son Bata New, which uses the arts (music, dance, visual arts etc) to promote cultural awareness and equality in the Afro-Colombian community. In addition to acting as a role model and father figure for many of the youth in his community he also had a two year old daughter of his own. His loss not oly affected his immediate family but also affected his neighborhood and the larger community of Medellin.

Andres Felipe was an active volunteer of the YMCA in Medellin and was also very close to our Colombian YMCA Youth Exchange participants Jeison, Julian, and Yuli, so when they heard of his death they were devastated. From Toronto Jeison, Julian and Yuli instantly started calling home and mobilizing their community members, to walk in a march that took place that same day as this tragic death.

Violence is a reality for many people around the world and it is through people like Medina that we can still have hope for a peaceful future. Violence creates a ripple effect but so can peace.

What is your involvement with the YMCA?

I have been part of the JUGANDHI group since 2006. This group is part of the education and coexistence work that the YMCA of Medellin does. We work with youth and children to promote nonviolence and children’s rights through cooperative games. I am also an active part of Peace Day celebrations.

Who are your role models?

My mother is my biggest inspiration, because although she is simple, she has done so much for me. I’m also inspired by the writer Paulo Freire. He is Brazilian and I love his books because he talks about freedom and world transformation through education.

What is your passion?

My passion is working with children and young people in order to be part of the transformation of my city. I dream that Medellin can be a peaceful place, without the violence that we have in our daily lives. My other passion is studying and reading about social work.

What would you like to share with people in Toronto?

I want to share knowledge about my community, the YMCA of Medellín and the many skills I have learned to promote non-violence.

What are you hoping to learn from your experience in Canada?

I want to learn about different YMCA programs that work with children and youth, such as Peel Youth Village and the Strong Kids Campaign. I am also hoping to learn new methodologies and strategies for working with the people in Medellin. As well I am excited to learn about Canadian culture and society and to visit Niagara Falls!

What is your involvement with the YMCA?

I’m responsible for youth programs at the YMCA of Ziguinchor. In my role I have been able to use my energy and creativity to attract young volunteers to the three YMCA branches of southern Senegal. I have also been involved in a range of YMCA programs including radio broadcasts, the reproductive health and HIV/AIDS program, the promotion of child rights, peace programs and in the fight against landmines. I also represented the YMCA at the African Alliance youth summit in Ethiopia in 2009, where I was certified as a Subject to Citizen Ambassador!

Who are your role models?

My role model is Nelson Mandela, for his humanism and his sense of sacrifice, patience, determination, and endurance. Thinking of Nelson Mandela reminds me that I must continue to fully participate in creating positive change both within myself and for the world around me.
What is your passion? One of my passions is sports such as soccer and swimming. Sports allow me to keep fit and also to relax. Music is another passion of mine. I like to sing and lead songs at camps, and music also helps me relax and spread joy around me.
What would you like to share with people in Toronto?
I would like to share my experience in managing groups of children and youth at the YMCA in Ziguinchor. I would also like to share my commitment to volunteering, my life and the love I have for my community.

What are you hoping to learn from your experience in Canada?

I want to have a variety of experiences through exploring the culture of young YMCA participants from all different cultural backgrounds. I also want to learn more about managing programs for children and youth, and use that knowledge to enrich the programs at the YMCA in Senegal.
